Is Twitter A Waste Of Time ?
Have you ever asked yourself this question ? I’m still pretty new to twitter. I’ve had an account for ages but never really used it. I couldn’t see the point of it. And now that I’ve been using it more frequently, my initial suspicions are being realized. It just seems like a waste of time. Here’s why….
People are writing or tweeting but nobody is reading.
I’ve cottoned on to the Twitter etiquette of following people that follow you. However most of the people that follow you have thousands of followers and follow the same etiquette. Presumably they must get hundreds of tweets sent to them each day. So many, in fact, that they can’t possibly read them all.
The assumption is that they aren’t really using it as a way to communicate but simply to spam people.
Other people retweet news stories from Associated Press, Reuters and other news agencies. So they are sending me about 20 plus tweets a day about inane or unimportant news stories (well, important to someone but not to me). And I don’t get this kind of news from Twitter anyway.
I have no idea what the point of this is. Maybe it gets them noticed as someone who is very active on Twitter but still, what’s the point ? It’s just cluttering up Twitter and making more noise for people that follow them. We don’t need information but analysis of information to help us make informed decisions.
People send tweet after tweet, all of which are barely disguised affiliate links to a product. What’s more they send the same message 3 or 4 times a week.
This is showing no respect to the Twitter service or to people that follow them. You can only presume that they have a churn and burn strategy. They expect a person to follow them for a week and then drop them. Seems like a very short sighted and hamster wheel approach to using the service.
People seem to have multiple identities, as the same people send me the same tweets, even down to the identical hoplink or tracking code on the link. The strange thing about these multiple identities is that they all seem to be beautifully attractive women. Not super model attractive (whatever that is). Twitter users aren’t that gullible are they ? Can’t imagine Miranda Kerr recommending I try to take paid surveys to earn a bit of extra money online. But girl next door cute (whatever that is) to get you thinking…..
Again, a churn and burn strategy, except this time churning through Twitter user accounts rather than followers.
Other people seem to have quotes or aphorisms that are on rotation. The schedule of quotes will be tweeted a few times a week and then click back to the first quote at the start of the week. You can almost set your clock by it…if you could be bothered.
Maybe this suggests that the tweeter doesn’t expect people to follow them for long or just can’t bothered to engage with their followers personally. Maybe I am being too cynical. Maybe there is simply nothing to talk or tweet about but they just want to appear active. Maybe if something did come up that was worth talking about, they would get all personal and become a real person.
I guess the take away from this is to be more selective about who you follow…or a cascade of spam will be coming your way. Seems to me that Twitter has lost it’s way.
How do you use Twitter ? Is it a useful tool in your business or online endeavors ?
