What’s The Difference Between Make Money Online And Internet Marketing ? – Part One
The terms make money online (MMO) and internet marketing (IM) often get used to mean the same thing but this is not strictly true. In fact IM is more of a subset of MMO…a rather large subset in fact so it’s easy to see why the terms are seemingly interchangeable. But why is it important to know the difference between make money online and internet marketing ? Well, if you are new to either of these activities, you need to know what each activity entails and this will help you understand if you are suited to it. You don’t want to start something and realize that you hate it or that you don’t have the aptitude for it. In short you don’t want to waste time. So get informed before you jump in.
Make Money Online Is A Catch All
Make money online is effectively a catch all for all sorts of activities that you do online to make money. New ways are probably popping up all the time but here are a few classic examples that fall outside the realm of internet marketing.
Online Surveys – I have never tried online surveys but read about them when I first got started. I effectively decided they were not for me. They seemed to require plenty of your time and the rewards weren’t that great. It was like a poorly paid job just that you did it on the internet.
The general gist of the method is that you pay for a product that supplies you with a list of companies that pay money for marketing information. You would often have to qualify to take a survey – meaning fit into the demographic or skill set that the company wanted information on. So well paying surveys were often hard to qualify for.
I believe most online surveys are legitimate but they don’t stack up as a viable way to make money online in the long term. You are just trading your time for money and the money isn’t very good anyway. With this said, if you are a stay at home mom and have a few hours to spare each day it might make sense to get a bit of pocket money. But to me there are better – more profitable way to spend you time.
High Yield Investment Programs – I looked at these when I first started looking at ways to make money online (about 5 years ago). To me these are at worst outright scams and at best highly risky ventures. I believe they are Ponzi schemes that get investors because they have an internet presence and look kind of professional.
I think these schemes might work for people that get in at the beginning but not for people at the tail end of a scheme. And even for people at the beginning, knowing when to get out can be difficult. Don’t be too greedy I guess. I have never done these personally for the risk and also I don’t feel comfortable ripping other people off.
Selling Stuff on E bay – This can be as simple as spring cleaning your home and finding items that you no longer need. Stick them on eBay and get a bit of money for them. Some people can take this a bit further and start sourcing items to sell on eBay permanently. Many people get started online via eBay as it is a very simple business model and the marketplace, marketing and promotion of your goods are taken care of.
Selling Services Online – For me these are totally legitimate ways to make money online but they are still just a job. You have just moved your job onto the internet. With this said, you can make a decent amount of money providing services. Most of these services involve working for people that do internet marketing so it is easy to see why the two terms are easily confused.
If you have a programming skill you can offer this as a service. Most people offer writing services at first as this is a skill that most people have. Again, you can spend a lot of time writing and the remuneration can be quite low but some people can really make this work. For instance, many people will charge 1 cent per word so you can see that this is not going to make you rich.
With this said, some people have a talent for writing or they may be able to write really fast. They might have specialized knowledge about a topic. These factors may help them charge much more for their writing services and some people can charge $50 per article which is not bad money by anyone’s standards.
As far as offering services go, take a look a fiverr for some out of the box thinking. People have their pets doing things. They make puppets that will promote a business, service or product. There are people singing happy birthday messages that can be sent to a friend. These are gimmicks but people seem to be making money with them.
On a more professional note, people also offer translation services – translating an article. Or others will offer voice over services.
Once a person gets good at offering a service, they can look to outsource much of the process and effectively turn their service into a fully fledged business. But you have to master other skills alongside the service you are offering before this can become a reality.
Most of the activities listed above are ways to make money online. Most are legitimate but they are basically a job online. For some people this may be fine and just what they are looking for but most people that get into making money online want a business or want to stop trading their time for money.
This is where internet marketing comes in. Internet marketing is more about creating a business rather than just a job. More on this in the next post.
