Why Do People Fail To Make It Online – Money For Nothing And Your Chics For Free ?

Back in 1985 – yes, I know it was a long time ago – Dire Straits released a song/video called Money for Nothing. It was kind of ironic and even a little condescending to some extent as it was sung from the point of view of some fat assed, stubble scratching stereotypical Tradesman. The Tradesman is whingeing about how Rocks stars (presumably Dire Straits themselves) get it easy – money for nothing…and your chics for free – when he has to bust his hump lifting heavy white goods (microwave ovens must have been pretty heavy in those days !)

The reality, according to Mark Knopfler (the singer from the band) was that they had to work their buts off to get to where they were and took huge risks to get there. The trappings might look seductive to the outsider but the reality of getting them is not what it seems.

So what does this mean about the making money online and people failing ?

Well, it is this attitude that marketers of information products foster in people who buy their products. And this attitude will almost certainly ensure you will fail.

Let’s start at the beginning. When you first decide you want to make it in internet marketing or some other venture online, you more or less accept that you have to learn how to do it or maybe you have just heard that people make a lot of money online and you want a piece of it. Whatever the reason, you buy some product or get some help in achieving your make money online goals.

Once you have accepted that you need help – once you become a buyer of make money online products – you are exposed to some very canny marketers in a very competitive market. The good marketers know what makes you tick – they know your problems, your hopes, your dreams and they pander to them.

Where’s my Aston Martin DB9 with money spewing out of the exhaust pipe ?

Why Do People Fail Online

Alas...there is no such thing as money for nothing

So like Fat Joe from the Dire Straits video, they know you are frustrated and they notch up the frustration by showing you luxury cars, beach side villas…maybe even bikini clad beauties if they are pretty confident that their target audience is exclusively male. See this hilarious spoof sales page.

They also say it’s easy to reach your goals with their product…they are just like you….or were just like you before they discovered some secret. In short, they sell you the dream.

Since you don’t know what is really involved and you may not even have a deep conviction about wanting to make it work, you believe them.

If they say push a few buttons and make hundreds of dollars you do this. You take them at their word. After all, you have to start somewhere, even if you are slightly skeptical.

You soon find out that you haven’t made hundreds of dollars and you’re a long way from that beach front villa. In fact this new secret you have just bought has raised more questions than you had before you read it.

So the product may not have worked as you expected or it may have caused more problems for you that need fixing before you can realize your dream.

If you are totally frustrated with the product, you may see something else that promises success but maybe it talks more about the problems you have just had with the previous “failed“ product. You think, gee it’s talking about my exact problem so you buy it.

This may work or it may not – most probably it won’t because there are no secrets to internet marketing or making money online. It just like the real world – you have something to sell and you sell it to people. That’s it. The more people you can sell it to the more money you will make. The internet is just the channel that you have chosen to use to sell your product.

And just because your friends don’t know much about internet marketing or someone that you don’t really know very well tells you to get in before everybody else discovers this brilliant opportunity doesn’t mean it will be easy.

So what’s the take away ?

  • Don’t believe the hype.
  • Find a business model within internet marketing that works for you.
  • Understand that to achieve success, like anything else in life, you are going to have to work at it. And work at it pretty darn hard to begin with.
  • Resist the temptation to live the dream that is promised in the myriad of information products on internet marketing.

There are no shortcuts…and usually the overnight sensations in the industry have been a work in progress for years and years….or extremely lucky…..or a genius…..or all of the above.

I think everyone internet marketer should get through this reading and buying useless products phase so he can really start to understand that nothing comes easy and it still requires work to earn some money.
The sooner you realize that you have to test and retest to find method that works for you the better chance you will get your beach front villa.

I would spell out in your “take away” message, my own problem – which has been lack of focus, and yes a series of “awesome systems”. (Loved the spoof sales page!!)

I always divided the “guaranteed income” by at least 100, and multiplied by at least 100 the work required until I would be “living the dream”. Even that was insufficient!

Some “awesome systems” have been better than others and I’ve now narrowed to a very short list the people whose products I trust to teach me something useful and deliver a good product!

I’m also pretty ruthless now at returning some of the drivel I’ve bought. Thank goodness for the Clickbank guarantee. Don’t abuse it though, as I’ve heard of people having the CB account closed for being “serial returners”.

I think we all have fell into that rut where we want to believe everything is as simple as pushing a button – I only know of one thing that really is as simple as that, but it is not going to make you any money..lol.

I haven’t heard Dire Straights in a long time – I grew up with them…great band and surely they didn’t just grow and populate overnight.

Nothing is going to make you money over night, unless you have a good product and people who are going to buy from you.

Excellent post here and good for you for pointing out these important tasks.

    Have a great weekend!

Great post Ade, looking forward to going through the rest of your site.
Love the analogy and the spoof page……..hilarious!!
It’s obvious that we all need to put in a lot of hard work but I believe the key is channelling our efforts into the right areas and concentrating on the tasks that need to be done (often the ones we’re scared of) rather than the tasks that are easier or more attractive.
Finally, there sure is a lot of hype out there, everybody’s telling everyone to avoid other peoples hype in their hype. It’s all quite bizarre really.
I’ll keep checking back for more interesting posts.
    All the best,

    Hi Adrian,

It’s true that there is no magic bullet
in internet marketing. The sooner we learn to
realize that, the sooner we will on our
    way to success.

Thanks for pointing out all of these points.
It helps to remind myself to stay focused and
not end up buying stuff all over searching for the
    magic pill.

    Take care.:)
