Should You Take A Break From Your Computer ?
As an internet marketer or blogger it’s easy to spend way too much time sitting in front of your computer. Even if all that time is productive, and let’s face it, you spend far too much time looking at youtube videos or checking email and stats than you’d like to admit, you need to take a break from your computer during the day and even at the end of the day. Believe it or not but this is a great productivity tip which I’ll explain in detail. But let me first ask you about your dreams….
Have you ever wondered what your dreams are about ? There you go, that’s not a completely left field question, it relates to my main point.
You can get all sorts of books that interpret your dreams. You can even pay people who will analyze your dreams for you.
Artists and writers seem to read a lot into their dreams. William Burroughs and Jim Morrison used to get up in the middle of the night and write their dreams in a dream book that would then be used as fodder for their creativity the next day.
Dali’s paintings are dreams !
Many of these guys had esoteric or elaborate theories about what or where a dream came from but I believe it is merely your brain purging itself of the previous days stuff.
Your brain is working through things that are on your mind and because we often take things in on a subconscious level, the dreams can be a little odd at times.
But they help our brains reboot and be ready for the next day. For me this is the point of dreams – they are like the reset button on the most powerful CPU we’ll every have.
So this analogy can be applied to internet marketing and blogging for me. At the end of the day, I get away from my computer to reboot my brain from internet marketing.
I go for a walk.
I’m lucky to live near a state forest or the bush if you like.
I’m literally 3 minutes walk away from it.
So each day I go for an hour long walk through the forest.
I see all sorts of wild life and other odds and ends during my walk.
Last week I saw a dead python that must have been about a meter long. It seemed to be a great shame that it was dead as the only thing likely to kill it was human.
I see kangaroos and wallabies all the time. They like to keep their distance and will bound away as soon as you get within about 100 meters of them.
The most interesting thing I’ve seen so far is an Echidna. They are quite solitary and secretive creatures so I count myself extremely lucky to have seen one in it’s own environment.
If you’ve never seen or heard of an Echidna before, it’s like a hedgehog or porcupine. I was walking along a trail in the forest and this little guy was tootling along his way. Our paths crossed so to speak and he immediately curled into a ball.
I’ve never seen one in the wild before so I stopped to look at him. Thinking I had moved on, he popped his nose out. Seeing me still there he immediately assumed the spiky ball position again. It made me laugh and I went on my way.
So what is this all about ?
Well, apart from helping me reboot from the days work, it also gives me time to think about what I need to do the next day. It helps me think in a more strategic manner about the things that need to be done in my business.
I prioritize what needs to be done.
I assess which goals are the most important.
I think about how I could be improving what I do each.
When you sit at a computer there is a great temptation to be doing stuff but if there is no purpose behind doing the stuff i.e. the strategy, then it could be wasted effort. Moreover, if you don’t have a plan about what needs to be done, you are more likely to spend time on unproductive tasks like watching youtube videos and such like.
Another thing to note about my daily walks is that sometimes I will listen to podcasts from other internet marketers. So this is a good way to find out other internet marketers or bloggers do what they do or keep up with the latest trends in the industry.
Finally, taking an hour long walk each day is great exercise.
Sitting at a computer all day is not good for the body in the long run. The internet marketers figure tends to expand is direct correlation to the number of years he/she works at it.
If this is the case you are more prone to getting sick which will impact your productivity.
Spending hours on end in front of your computer might sound like you are pulling out all the stops to make your business a success but it could actually be hindering you in the long run. Getting some time to reflect on your business away from the computer can give you fresh insights and better ways to do what you do. Make that getting away as interesting and far removed from your day to day work. It will not only rejuvenate you but even spark some new ideas.
